Matilda Tjäder

10 February 2016 — 07 March 2016

Artist and writer Matilda Tjäder spent three weeks at Jupiter Woods as a practitioner-in-residence, in April 2016, working both independently and alongside JW’s curators on elements adjacent to the public programme in February. This was punctuated by a series of encounter over the course of two months, exploring ideas of collaboration of exchange, and peer learning.

During winter the growth of vegetative tissues and reproductive structures become minimal. When the Sun is low, we withdraw to inward-looking practice.

Jupiter Woods has spent the beginning of the New Year in quiet research, dwelling on questions derived from our programme and practice to date. These have centred on curatorial methods of care, collaborative work and ‘sustainability’ in our context, involving a four-day journey to Paris, where we met with a number of artist-run initiatives: 22 Rue Muller, Tonus, Shanaynay, La Maudite, Palette Terre and Castillo/Corrales along with Section 7 Books.

Expanding slowly, we invite you to the next phase of this exploration. It will be in the form of a series of public ‘peer mentoring’ events in February, looking to open up some of our questions in conversation with Radical Reading (Athens), Auto Italia South East (London) and FormContent (London and Vienna). Through this we hope to learn from each other, envisioning pathways for future practice.

An informal event ‘a semla in three acts’ was organised together with former artist-in-residence Sanna Helena Berger, as a starting point for Matilda’s upcoming installations and inversions.
Other events organised were: Cultivated code: a trip to mythological artefacts and Ley Lines, in collaboration with Ming Lin.

Matilda Tjäder (b. 1989) mainly works with text as material directed and sculpted into varying forms and mediums – observing the interval between the imagined and the real as her source material. With a background in Aesthetics, her research is often concerned with the sensorial, currently via human and inhuman perceptions and aleatory practices.

Being the co-curator of the non-profit gallery Minibar Stockholm, the co-founder of the performative project Human Interference Task Force, and of the gamified platform Waves of Direction, she often works in collaborative and conversational bodies.
